Tracleer and PPH

This website was created to provide you with news about Tracleer (bosentan), a drug used to treat people who have been diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH). We also have information about PPH and its symptoms, new prescription medications such as Flolan and Remodulin, and other alternative methods of PPH treatment, as well as a free information packet on Tracleer, PPH, and other medications.

The Company Behind Tracleer

Actelion's first product was Tracleer (Also called bosentan) which is a dual endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA). It is taken orally for the treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is a chronic, life-threatening disease and is characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries that go between the heart and lungs. Tracleer functions to block the bad affects of a substance called endothelin that is produced by the endothelium. The endothelium is a layer of cells on the inner surface of blood vessels.

About 100,000 people in the USA and Europe are afflicted with either idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) or forms of the disease that are secondary to other conditions. The most common symptom of pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is dyspnea (breathlessness) is often misdiagnosed because it can be caused by a number of other diseases. Statistics show the average time for correct diagnosis is two to three years. This delay does not give the patient much time to live, once the diagnosis is final.

Until we had Tracleer there was little incentive for physicians to diagnose pulmonary arterial hypertension, since it was fatal and the treatment was a difficult for the patient. There was a product available for pulmonary arterial hypertension patients, but it had to be given intravenously via a catheter that was inserted directly into the patient's heart. Now Tracleer represents a huge change in the treatment that is available. Physicians can provide not only hope, they can target the underlying mechanism of the disease, reduce symptoms, postpone the time to clinical decline and maintain the patient’s quality of life.
